28th February,2024, Mumbai: Actress Somy Ali, who founded the US-based nonprofit organisation No More Tears, claims that her identity is shaped by her job and the individuals she saves. She continues by saying that she has found a family who show her a lot of love and gratitude for saving the lives of victims of rape and domestic abuse.
I choose to raise thousands of babies instead of just one, says Somy Ali
“At first, it was all local help and rescues with my savings,” she adds, describing her experience starting her NGO. “But after about five years, we started getting calls for help from all over the U.S.” I was shocked to learn that one day we received a call from India regarding the impending murder of a young guy whose family had discovered he was gay. At that point, his cousin sent us an email urging us to assist him and preserve his life, and I realised that NMT was now global.
A few years ago, I was present at his wedding, and these are the occasions that hold great significance and value in my life. I knew that if I became a mother or adopted a baby girl from India, I would have to close my NGO since I would be endangering my child’s life. I choose to raise thousands of babies instead of just one, and I love it when they run to me and call me “Somy mommy” while giving me hugs. It’s not nearly enough to satisfy my maternal desires.
More Details About NMT
“I do not have a business-minded brain and I do not see myself sitting behind a desk as the president and founder of NMT doing paperwork,” she adds while discussing her decision to create her non-governmental organisation. My favourite part of the job is getting my hands filthy and seeing every face we save—domestic, foreign, or both—while working with law enforcement’s assistance.
It sometimes shocks me to learn that NMT has saved over 40,000 women, children, and men since I never imagined that we would be aiding people in South America, the Middle East, and India. It is just impossible to describe the satisfaction one feels when they watch a child who has been abused grow up to be happy and successful in life after receiving therapy and time.
Somi On NMT Organization
“There are so many aspects to NMT that are very broad in its mission,” the speaker continues. The most amazing thing I have ever done in my life is to go to the wedding of a gay couple who were forbidden from being in love. It is inconceivable for me to attend our first victim’s Ph.D. graduation because she was beaten for merely wanting to further her studies and telling her husband. Looking back, I can honestly say that none of this would have been possible without the donations, and I continue to pray that people will continue to care about No More Tears every day. While I’m just doing what I love, they are the ones changing the world by giving.”
