20 June 2023, Mumbai: Sayani Gupta, a talented actor known for her versatile performances, recently discussed the evolution of the Indian audience’s reception towards LGBTQ+ content in films and shows. In a candid conversation, she shared her insights on the changing landscape and shed light on her personal journey while portraying queer characters. Gupta’s breakthrough role came in the critically acclaimed movie Margarita With A Straw (2013), where she fearlessly played the love interest of actor Kalki Koechlin’s character, who identifies as queer.
While some actors declined the role due to fear, Sayani Gupta recognized the importance of authentic storytelling and seized the opportunity to bring the character to life. Not doing a part like this is pure dumb, is what I feel,” Gupta expressed with conviction. She firmly believed that the merit of a role should never be overshadowed by societal stigmas or fear.
To prepare for her role, Sayani Gupta went above and beyond by immersing herself in the LGBTQ+ community. During a two-week stay in New York, she frequented gay bars, immersing herself in the environment and gaining a deeper understanding of the community’s experiences. This eye-opening journey provided her with invaluable insights and highlighted the importance of inclusivity and empathy. Reflecting on the past decade since the release of Margarita With A Straw, Gupta acknowledges the positive changes in the Indian audience’s mindset. Both the younger and older generations have become more aware, open, and inclusive.
While progress has been made, Gupta believes there is still a long way to go. She metaphorically states, “We are walking in the right direction; we haven’t started running yet. But walking is important so you can run.” Sayani Gupta also acknowledges the challenges faced by individuals within the industry who identify as gay or bisexual but have not publicly come out. She emphasizes the importance of creating a safe and secure environment where everyone feels comfortable being their authentic selves.
Gupta urges society to support and uplift the LGBTQIA+ community, allowing them the freedom to express their true identities. In addition, she highlights the ongoing struggle for the legal recognition of homosexual marriages and emphasizes that it’s a matter of basic human rights. Gupta calls for unity and solidarity, urging the government and society to provide a safe space for all individuals, regardless of their gender or sexual orientation.
As Pride Month serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight for equality, Sayani Gupta’s journey and insightful remarks serve as a beacon of hope. Through her unwavering dedication to her craft and her belief in the power of inclusivity, Gupta continues to pave the way for more authentic and diverse portrayals in Indian cinema and beyond. What do you think?
