Composer AR Rahman is being talked about on social media after a video of him asking his wife to speak in Tamil instead of Hindi at an awards show went viral. During the Vikatan Cinema awards, Rahman invited his wife Saira Banu on stage to accept a trophy alongside him. When she was about to speak, Rahman asked her to speak in Tamil instead of Hindi, causing Saira to appear uncomfortable.
Despite having worked across different industries and languages, Rahman has always advocated for the Tamil language. He even shared an illustration of the word “Thamizhanangu” or “Goddess Tamil” last year when Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that people should communicate with each other in Hindi instead of English.
Rahman and Saira have been married since 1995, with their marriage arranged by Rahman’s mother. Rahman has previously shared that he didn’t have time to search for a bride himself because of his busy film schedule in Bombay.
