The first trailer for Pedro Almodóvar’s latest short film, “Strange Way of Life,” featuring Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke, has been released. The film is a queer Western, and Almodóvar’s chance to create the movie “Brokeback Mountain” the way he envisioned it. Almost two decades ago, he was offered the opportunity to direct the Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger film but declined due to concerns about creative limitations.
Almodóvar revealed that the film is about two men who love each other and behave in opposite ways, and it has all the elements of a Western, such as gunslingers, ranches, and sheriffs. However, what sets it apart is the unique dialogue that has never been captured in a Western film. The Spanish filmmaker admitted that he might have given away too much information about the film.
The story follows Silva, played by Pedro Pascal, a cowboy who travels on horseback across the desert to reunite with his old friend Sheriff Jake, played by Ethan Hawke. Silva discovers that the purpose of his trip is not just to reminisce about the past, as he and Sheriff Jake untangle their complicated romantic history.
“Strange Way of Life” is Almodóvar’s second English-language project, following his 2020 short film “The Human Voice,” which starred Tilda Swinton. Anthony Vaccarello, the creative director of Saint Laurent, served as the film’s costume designer and producer, while Alberto Iglesias, a regular collaborator of Almodóvar, is also a producer and composer.
The short film is set to premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival
