History
The company was formed to promote and develop the natural gas sector in the country. Over the years, GAIL has done well in this field. On the Jagdishpur-Haldia/Bokaro-Dhamra Pipeline, GAIL has begun construction. This was originally intended to be built over a 2050 km distance between Haldia, Bengal, and Jagdishpur, Uttar Pradesh. However, it has been changed now. The pipeline will link the Dhamra port to the gas grid in Varanasi. The more than 2,500-kilometer line, which will be built in three stages, would now also connect Odisha’s Dhamra LNG import plant owned by the Adani Group.
A trunk pipeline from Phulpur (Allahabad) to Dobhi (Gaya) in Bihar, with spur lines to Barauni and Patna, would be constructed in the first phase. By building a 672-km parallel line for Rs 4,300 crore from Vijaipur in Madhya Pradesh to Phulpur via Auriaya in Uttar Pradesh, it is increasing the pipeline’s capacity. Phase II would cost Rs 5,565 crore and involve building a 1200 km line from Dobhi to Bokaro/Ranchi in Jharkhand and Angul and Dharma in Odisha. Phase III will cost Rs 3,425 crore and entail constructing a 583-km line to Haldia.
