Sushmita Sen’s Bollywood career path is a little strangely perplexing. She finished every job. After beginning her career as Ms. Universe, she made sure she wouldn’t be just another glam woman in the film industry because there were already too many of those. Although she didn’t hesitate to accept these roles, when she did, she made sure to keep them in mind for a completely different performance in the future. In her acting debut, Dastak, she played a stalker. She then went on to star in Sirf Tum’s iconic Dilbar track and tried her hand at comedy in David Dhawan’s film Biwi No. 1, in which she played the stereotypical other woman.
She was the picture of glitz and beauty, and she was dangerously close to being derided as a vamp because she was a wealthy and powerful woman who was always passed over for the “simpler” options, down-to-earth, and middle-class woman.”
Sushmita’s professional life, however, was rife with twists, just like her personal life. She made the transition while many 90s heroines struggled with the 2000s, and she chose to take on some unusual roles while continuing to act in the old masala. She appeared in the surrogacy movie Filhaal after appearing in the reincarnation dramas Aankhein and Tumko Na Bhool Payenge. When she played the lead in the gripping crime thriller Samay, she shed the glitz and revealed a new side of her acting prowess.
Sushmita played a cop and a mother who are on the case to find a serial killer, putting aside the flamboyant and vampish melodrama. Sushmita delivers the most heartbreaking performance of her career in the film’s pivotal climax scene, when she realises that her daughter might also be a victim. Without departing from her persona or crying excessively, she decides to stop the killer’s career. Sushmita gave one of her most memorable performances throughout her career, perhaps even more so than her most recent hit, Aarya.
Sushmita has had a lot of successes and failures, but no matter what she’s done, she’s always left a lasting impression. It’s difficult to imagine someone else taking on the role of Main Hoon Na’s desi Miss Chandni at this point. She excelled at fusing comedy and sensuality in this particular role. Now in 2022, Sushmita has had two successful seasons of Aarya in which she portrayed a vengeful mother. She also has another web series in development in which she will play transgender activist Shree Gauri Sawant.
Even when her movies didn’t do well or if she took a break from acting, Sushmita didn’t disappear from the public eye. Sushmita’s personality, the face she presents to the world, and the decisions she has made in life all play a significant role. She adopted Renee at the age of 24 and Alisah in 2010. Even after their relationship ended in 2021, she has always been frank about it, assuring fans that they would always be friends. This includes her relationship with Rohman Shawl, the model. After Lalit Modi revealed that he was dating her earlier this year, there was a flurry of discussion. Sushmita was accused of being a “gold digger,” and she was attacked for it.
Without addressing the actual relationship, Sushmita called out those who had called her that and wrote a gracefully snarky post saying that she could buy diamonds on her own and didn’t need anyone else to. She made sure that she wouldn’t be reduced to a mother figure, the sum of her relationships, or anything else that Bollywood wanted to call her. She keeps her followers guessing about her next move, just like she does with her movie choices, and there is a hint of mystery surrounding her curious magnanimity.
