7th July 2023, Mumbai: Barun Sobti, one of the biggest names on Indian television, has always followed his instincts when it comes to his acting career. With his latest Netflix series ‘Kohrra’ set to release on July 15, Barun reflects on his journey, his choices, and the influence of his wife, Pashmeen Manchanda, in shaping his acclaimed career.
Having started his acting career in 2009, Barun gained immense popularity with the television show ‘Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon.’ After conquering the small screen, he ventured into films with ‘Main Aur Mr. Riight’ (2014) and the critically acclaimed ‘Tu Hai Mera Sunday.’ Additionally, Barun made his mark in the streaming world with series and films like ‘Asur,’ ‘Halahal,’ and ‘The Great Indian Dysfunctional Family.’
In a recent interview, Barun revealed that he pays little attention to what people say about his career. When asked if he listens to public opinion, the actor humorously replied, “I don’t talk to people!” He firmly believes in making choices based on his own gut feelings, often consulting his wife for suggestions.
Barun candidly acknowledged the role his wife plays in his career decisions. He stated, “My wife is the only one who knows the projects I am doing. She is so deep into my life, she just knows what I am going to do, not going to do.” He further added that she might be more critical than him, jokingly saying, “If it was entirely up to her, I’d be doing less work!”
The actor emphasised that he doesn’t care about public opinions and would only stop doing something if he becomes bored with it, not because of what others say. Barun shared an incident where he was offered a film by a reputed production house during a rough patch in his career. Although he briefly considered taking the project, his wife intervened, reminding him of the importance of personal happiness. Her words resonated with him, leading him to decline the offer.
Barun expressed his excitement about his role in ‘Kohrra,’ directed by Randeep Jha. The series revolves around the investigation into the death of an NRI, whose body is found shortly before his wedding. Breaking away from his romantic hero image, Barun plays a Punjabi cop in the six-episode show. The actor mentioned that he was pleasantly surprised by the unconventional role, as the creators wanted something different from his previous portrayals, allowing him creative freedom.
‘Kohrra’ is produced by Clean Slate Films, known for their work on ‘Paatal Lok.’ The show is created by Gunjit Chopra, Diggi Sisodia, and Sudip Sharma. With a focus on realism, Barun embraced the brief and delivered a performance that adds a fresh dimension to his acting repertoire.
