On Wednesday, the first trailer for director James Cameron’s long-awaited Avatar: The Way of Water was released, ahead of the film’s global premiere next month. Avatar 2 has been in the works for over a decade, with Cameron going to great lengths to ensure the perfect sequel. Avatar, the first film, was released in 2009 and is still the highest-grossing film of all time.
In the new stunning trailer, we return to Pandora and meet Jake Sully’s (Sam Worthington) daughter, who tells him she feels “her heartbeat,” though it’s unclear who she’s referring to. The trailer then shows the Pandora creatures against a pounding soundtrack in a gleam of blue. There are sequences of beauty and joy intermixed with terrors and dangers as Zoe Saldana’s Neytiri shouts, “This is our habitat.” The trailer concludes with hope as Jake makes Neytiri promise to be strong. The message promises to be just as heavy as in the first film, with a focus on family and nature. We see new aspects of Pandora that we haven’t seen before.
Avatar: The Way of Water will transport fans to new areas of Pandora’s world, with much of it shot using cutting-edge underwater photography techniques. He also shot the third film concurrently, but work on the proposed fourth and fifth films will not begin in earnest until Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 are successful.
The original Avatar was about a group of human invaders sent on a mission to plunder an alien land for resources.
Avatar’s cultural significance has been much debated, despite the fact that it broke box office records but did not spawn the kind of multi-platform franchise that other big-budget films do.
For example, there were no multiple television shows or video games to pass the time between the two films. James Cameron previously stated that he could see himself making only Avatar films for the rest of his career, but recent reports suggest that the series could be continued by different filmmakers once Cameron is finished with his core story.
Avatar: The Way of Water stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Edie Falco, Jemaine Clement, and Kate Winslet. The film will be released in theatres on December 16th.
