23 June 2023, Mumbai:In a recent interview , renowned Hollywood actress Margot Robbie opened up about her experience working on the highly anticipated Barbie movie directed by Greta Gerwig. Robbie, who stars as the iconic doll herself, expressed her initial scepticism regarding the film’s production and the unexpected direction taken by Gerwig.
Upon reading the script, Robbie was captivated by its genius, but she doubted that the movie would ever come to fruition. “When I read the script, I thought, ‘This is genius, and they’re never going to let us make it. What a shame it’s totally going to go to waste,'” she shared. Robbie was particularly impressed by Gerwig’s vision for the film, which delves into the complexities of Barbie’s character and addresses both the criticisms and adoration surrounding the iconic toy.
Robbie also mentioned that a character inspired by the CEO of Mattel, the company behind Barbie, is included in the film. She teased that there are many humorous moments centered around the toy’s legacy, suggesting that the movie will strike a perfect balance between acknowledging the problematic aspects associated with Barbie while celebrating what people love about her.
Interestingly, Robbie revealed in an interview with British Vogue that she initially envisioned Gal Gadot, the celebrated actress known for her role as Wonder Woman, as the perfect fit for the Barbie movie. Robbie explained that Gadot exudes the same energy that Barbie represents—an impossible beauty combined with genuine sincerity and an enthusiastically kind nature, bordering on endearing dorkiness. However, due to scheduling conflicts, Gadot was unavailable for the role.
Directed by Greta Gerwig and co-written by Gerwig’s husband, Noah Baumbach, the Barbie motion picture may be a fantasy comedy inspired by the popular Mattel design dolls. In addition to Robbie’s portrayal of Barbie, the star-studded cast includes Ryan Gosling as Ken, popstar Dua Lipa, Simu Liu, and Will Ferrell. The film is written by Helen Mirren and produced by Warner Bros.
Audiences eagerly await the release of the Barbie movie, set to hit theatres on July 23, where it’ll go head-to-head with Christopher Nolan’s exceedingly expected film, Oppenheimer.
With Margot Robbie’s insights into the movie’s interesting approach and her beginning casting inclinations, it is evident that Barbie will offer an unforeseen and thought-provoking take on the popular doll, promising an energising cinematic involvement for fans around the world.
