With 11 nominations, the science fiction thriller “Everything Everywhere All at Once” prevailed the 95th Academy Awards nominations announced on Tuesday morning. It was closely followed by the World War I epic “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “The Banshees of Inisherin,” which received nine nominations each and is a darkly humorous look at a friendship that takes place against the backdrop of the Irish civil war.
These three films will compete for the best picture award. Together with “Elvis,” a musical biography that was popular with audiences last summer, the two highest-grossing movies of the year, “Avatar: The Way of Water” and “Top Gun: Maverick,” are included in the best picture contest. Other possibilities are “The Fabelmans,” a semi-autobiographical film by Steven Spielberg; “Tár,” a story of a violent conductor; “Women Talking,” a look at the members of a totalitarian religious sect; and “Triangle of Sadness” a parody of the 1% that partially takes place aboard a mega-yacht.
Tuesday morning saw a good performance for Triangle of Sadness, one of the year’s most contentious movies, earning nods for both its screenplay and its direction from Swedish director Ruben stlund. Spielberg, Todd Field from “Tár,” Martin McDonagh from “The Banshees of Inisherin,” and Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert from “Everything Everywhere All at Once” will compete for the best director award. This category is exclusively composed of men. There were some hopes that “Women Talking’s” Sarah Polley may win best director after the prior two winners, Jane Campion (“The Power of the Dog”) and Chloe Zhao (“Nomadland”), were both females.
Jimmy Kimmel, who has presided as emcee three times, will once again host the Oscars. The ceremony was presided over by him in both 2017 and 2018. With Amy Schumer, Wanda Sykes, and Regina Hall as hosts last year, the Oscars resurrected their host format after a two- year hiatus. The 95th Academy Awards, which will be broadcast live on ABC, will take place on March 12, 2023, in the Dolby Theatre at the Ovation Hollywood
