25th June 2023, Mumbai: Actress Gauahar Khan, who gave birth to a boy as her first kid last month, recently disclosed that she lost 10 kilogrammes of the weight she gained after giving birth in just 10 days. Fans began to question whether such a drastic weight loss, especially for a new mother, was indeed feasible after she uploaded a picture of herself on Instagram. Many social media users criticised it as harmful and believed that it places unattainable standards on new mothers. Actor argues in her defence that it is none of our business to discuss how and when a new mother should maintain a healthy weight.“
Talking on someone’s weight is completely absurd. This is such a pointless subject and conversation. Someone has recently become a mother, therefore if you drop 10 kg in 10 days or 100, it has nothing to do with becoming a mother. It is irrelevant whether the person is losing weight quickly or slowly, or whether they are returning to their normal shape”, says Surveen.
The actor, who welcomed a child in April 2019, emphasises that entering this new stage of life causes a woman’s body to go through a lot of changes. “Therefore, it is impossible to say how long or short it took a woman to regain her former weight or shape. It is really intimate and it should not be on anybody’s agenda,” adds the 38-year-old.
This is not the first time that an actor’s weight gain after giving birth has become a hot subject on social media. Actors like Neha Dhupia, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Mahi Vij, and Rupali Ganguly have faced teasing in the past for being on the heavy side following childbirth. Before uttering hurtful things or passing judgement on new mothers’ bodies, Surveen contends that people should be a little more understanding of them.
People need to recognise that social media platforms are far more important than us, so there is no need to even bring up the topic for discussion. “While as actors, we are given the full duty of being public figures and how we influence the world. You discuss our relationships, our jobs, and occasionally even critique us. Because we are well-known figures and you have every right, everything is good. But talking about someone’s body and losing weight is falling to a new low, especially at a time when a woman’s body has undergone enormous, inexplicable transformation”, the actor claims, hoping that such an attitude will alter moving ahead.
