Bollywood films release every Friday and we witness all kinds of genres in them. Some are commercial and some are off-beat. Some are mega budget projects and some are small content driven.
And some are the most unexpected movies that turn out to give the biggest box office collections. Yes these are the movies that people think might come and go in a jiffy but they stay, entertain and earn big molaah.
Here’s taking a look at such Bollywood films that turned out to be unexpected hits in cinema.
Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety
The movie surpassed all expectations and gave shocking numbers at the box office. The Pyaar Ka Punchnama cast and crew came together to show a different story-line, the bromance one, and the audience loved it.
While many were thinking it’s a small budget movie and might be repetitive like the old series, SKSKT broke the notions and went onto become the second highest grosser of 2018 after Padmaavat.
Raid
Raid is a period crime thriller film featuring Ajay Devgn, Ileana D’Cruz and Saurabh Shukla. The film is inspired by the real life I-T raids that were conducted by the officers of the Indian Revenue Service in the 1980s.
While the movie is slow in parts and shows only one raid in 2 hours, the movie has caught the attention of movie goers and has given it a big thumbs up. Ajay Devgn, who is typecasted in a Golmaal or Singham genre, broke the monotony with this film and the results sure are great.
Golmaal 4
The Golmaal series came out with its fourth instalment. This one was a mix of horror, drama and comedy. There were also two new fresh faces in the franchise, Parineeti Chopra and Tabu. And boy, they didn’t fail to disappoint. Considering how movie series usually flop after their 2nd and 3rd instalment, this one went onto become a big blockbuster.
Tusshar Kapoor who now only features in the Golmaal series and Kunal Kemmu who wasn’t seen in a long time, surprised us with their on point comic timing and box office collection. While the movie received mixed reviews, the audience made it a hit.
Secret Superstar
In China, the film has already made up to Rs 500 crore and became a record breaking hit.
It is the highest-grossing 2017 Hindi film, and the second-highest-grossing Hindi film of all time, behind only Dangal (2016). It is also the third-highest-grossing Indian film of all time, behind only Dangal and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion.
Hindi Medium
Irrfan Khan and Pakistani actor Saba Qamar starrer film crossed Rs 100 crore and became the fifth film to enter the coveted club in 2017. The movie also became the third film to be released in China after Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Secret Superstar.
The film was a satirical take on India’s education system and how running a school is growing into a money minting business, making lower class parents and child suffer.
English Vinglish
This was Sridevi’s comeback in cinema after a long time and people had their figures crossed. The phenomenal actress that she was in the 80s, people had their expectations high. And the lady did not disappoint. Taking a real life problem on how people treat someone who doesn’t know English won our hearts and the fabulous collection said it all. She proved she can still be the hero in her films.
According to Box Office India, English Vinglish’s overseas gross figures was over US$4 million, making it one of the Top 10 highest overseas grossing Bollywood films of 2012.
Dum Laga Ke Haisha
Dum Laga Ke Haisha became one of the few Hindi films, which earned more in the second weekend than the first weekend. Dum Laga Ke Haisha also recorded the 5th highest weekend in 2015. In Bollywood films, people flock around in movie halls to see an actress who is good looking, has a fabulous body, a couple of item songs and dancing around trees. But this movie proved that the body and face of an actress doesn’t have to be at par with the other leading ones if the content is good. And thus began the onset of good cinema.
