Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, one of the most renowned blockbusters in Hindi cinema, was produced by Sunny Deol and Anil Sharma in 2001. Sunny Deol, as Tara Singh, travelled to Pakistan to defend Sakeena (Ameesha Patel), the love of his life, and rallied support from the entire country. Gadar witnessed multitudes attending the movie theatres in buses and trucks even from areas without movie theatres. The action-packed movie demolished Sooraj Barjatya’s Hum Aapke hai Kaun’s seven-year-old record to become the highest-grossing movie in Indian cinema history.
With Gadar 2, Anil Sharma is reviving his Tara Singh after 22 years. The filmmaker has guaranteed that the sequel will live up to the hype and continue the legacy of the first part, and the movie is currently in the final stages of production. Gadar 2’s release has been the subject of rumours throughout the past few months. And now, Pinkvilla has learned exclusively that the makers, Zee Studios, have set a release date for Gadar 2 after consulting with the director, Anil Sharma, and the actor, Sunny Deol.
“Gadar 2 is all set to release on August 11, 2023, coinciding with the Independence Day 2023 weekend. It’s a film that celebrates the sense of being an Indian and there’s no better period that Independence Day for it’s release. The edit work is underway and an official announcement on the release date shall follow soon,” revealed a source close to the development.
It’s interesting to note that a second movie, Animal, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Bobby Deol, and Rashmika Mandanna, has also been scheduled for the Independence Day weekend. Animal is directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga. This Fourth of July, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol will face off in theatres. The era is large enough to accommodate both movies, even if they are both popular big-budget sagas. The history will repeat itself for Gadar 2 because even Gadar: Ek Prem Katha competed with Lagaan at the box office, according to the source.
Gadar 2 is a sequel in the truest meaning of the word because it jumps ahead 20 years and centres on an event that leads Tara Singh back to Pakistan. In contrast to the first part, in which he fought for the love of his life, the second half centres on his struggle to defend his son Jeete, who is played by Utkarsh Sharma. Insiders say that the sequel maintains the angst, drama, and intensity of the first movie. The movie was shot in numerous cities across the nation.
The filmmaker had previously discussed the difficulties of creating a sequel to something as legendary as Gadar. Many fans of Gadar are dubious about the sequel, he had said. Their sole concern is that we uphold the legacy of the first section. This only reveals their affection for Gadar. The decision to produce Gadar 2 was made in a very responsible manner by Sunny Sir, Shaktimaan Ji, Zee, and me.
