10 June 2023, Mumbai: The Kerala Story, directed by Sudipto Sen, initially took the box office by storm with its release. However, the film’s collection has gradually slowed down, struggling to surpass the Rs 40 crore milestone. On June 9, it barely managed to earn Rs 40 lakh, indicating a significant decline in audience turnout. As a result, it is likely that The Kerala Story will soon be removed from theaters. Nevertheless, considering the film was initially banned in Bengal and not screened in Tamil Nadu, these numbers are still noteworthy.
Since its release on May 5, The Kerala Story has been embroiled in various controversies. Despite the setbacks, the film made a significant impact at the box office. By Day 18, it even crossed the coveted Rs 200 crore mark. However, the film’s momentum began to wane thereafter. According to early trade estimates, on Day 36 (June 9), The Kerala Story earned approximately Rs 40 lakh, bringing its total collection to around Rs 238.87 crore. This puts the film within striking distance of the Rs 240 crore milestone. On June 9, the film’s occupancy rate in Hindi theaters stood at 11.74 percent.
The Kerala Story delves into the tale of a Hindu woman hailing from Kerala, portrayed by Adah Sharma. In the film, she is manipulated and coerced into embracing Islam before being sent to Syria, where she is forced to join the ISIS terrorist organization. Her journey is one of struggle and torture, highlighting the grim realities faced by individuals caught in the clutches of extremism. Sudipto Sen helms the directorial responsibilities, with Vipul Amrutlal Shah serving as the producer. The Kerala Story has faced scrutiny ever since its trailer was released, further adding to the film’s intrigue.
