17th March, Mumbai: Erin Doherty, who starred in The Crown, has signed on to star in Steven Knight’s A Thousand Blows on Disney+.
Doherty, who garnered praise for playing Princess Anne in the Netflix royal drama, The Crown, will take on the role of Mary Carr, the head of the Forty Elephants. Malachi Kirby, who is the series’ executive producer, and Stephen Graham are her co-stars. Ashley Walters, who directed Topboy, has joined the crew as series director.
In A Thousand Blows, a world of illegal boxing in 1880s Victorian London is shown. The dynamic and violent melting pot of post-industrial London’s East End is where Hezekiah (Kirby) and his best friend Alec (Francis Lovehall) find themselves. Along the way, they meet Carr (Doherty) and professional boxer Sugar Goodson (Graham).
Francis Lovehall, Jason Tobin, James Nelson-Joyce, Hannah Walters, Nadia Albinam, Morgan Hilaire, Jemma Carlton, and Caoilfhionn Dunne have all joined the group, and production has begun in London. Malachi Kirby, who starred in Little Axe, was previously revealed to have a major role. Walters has been named as the show’s director with Coky Giedroyc.
The 12 part series is the most recent work by prolific Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight, who is serving as the series’ principal writer in a writers’ room that also includes Ameir Brown, Insook Chappell, Harlan Davies, and Yasmin Joseph.
Lead director and EP Tinge Krishnan. The Story Collective, Matriarch Productions, and Water & Power Productions are working together to co-produce the show. The executive producers of A Thousand Blows include Tom Miller and Sam Myer for Water & Power Productions, Damian Keogh and Kate Lewis for The Story Collective, and Graham and Hannah Walters for Matriarch Productions. In addition to serving as first-block producer on the show, broadcaster David Olusoga will also serve as executive producer. Lee Mason is EP for Disney+.
