20th March, Mumbai: Lance Reddick, an actor known for playing focused, frigid, and potentially menacing authorities in movies and television, including The Wire, Fringe, and the John Wick series, has passed away. The beloved actor was 60.
Reddick passed away “suddenly” on Friday morning, according to a statement from his spokeswoman Mia Hansen, who gave natural causes as the reason for death. No more information was given.
On Twitter, Wendell Pierce, Reddick’s co-star on The Wire, paid tribute. He described the actor as “a man of immense strength and grace”. “He was equally skilled as a musician as an actor. The height of class”, Pierce added. Chad Stahelski, the director of John Wick: Chapter Four, and star Keanu Reeves paid tribute to Reddick in the film and expressed their “great sadness and heartbreak” over his passing.
Throughout his acting career, Reddick frequently appeared as a tall, reserved, and distinguished man dressed in suits or sharp uniforms. He was most remembered for his portrayal of the stiff-upper Lt. Cedric Daniels in the acclaimed HBO drama The Wire, in which his character was agonisingly caught up in the tangled intrigues of the Baltimore police force.
David Simon, the creator of The Wire, hailed Reddick on Twitter and said: “Consummate professional, devoted colleague, charming and compassionate man, loyal friend. I could go on, but I’m at a loss for words. It’s heartbreaking. It is also far too early.”
In addition, Reddick played the multi-talented Continental Hotel concierge Charon in the John Wick movies produced by Lionsgate, including the fourth instalment of the series, which will be released later this month. He also appeared as a special agent on the Fox television programme Fringe as Phillip Broyles, as the well-dressed Matthew Abaddon on Lost, and as Lost.
“Without Lance Reddick and the unrivalled complexity he added to Charon’s compassion and unflappable charisma, the world of Wick would not be what it is today. We will remember Lance as our delightful, happy friend and Concierge, not as the indelible legacy and enormously outstanding amount of work he leaves us,” Lionsgate said in a statement.
Some works of Reddick will be released posthumously. He will soon be seen on the screen on the remake of White Guys Can’t Jump for 20th Century and Shirley, the Netflix biopic of former congresswoman Shirley Chisholm. Along with The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, he was also expected to star in the John Wick spinoff Ballerina.
