2nd June 2023, Mumbai: The current Hollywood writers’ strike has forced the postponement of Tom Holland’s upcoming Spider-Man film.
With the hero returning to his “grounded” roots after the Multiverse antics of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Spider-Man 4 is confirmed to be in development.
The project’s story has already been finished, according to Marvel Studios CEO Kevin Feige, who also said that writers were “just putting pen to paper” on the sequel’s script.
The continuing writers’ strike, according to Sony Pictures president Amy Pascal, appears to have put an halt to production on Spider-Man 4.
Tom Holland revealed to Variety that the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike has forced Spider-Man 4’s production to be delayed indefinitely.
The meetings they “have been having” on the project, according to Holland, have been put “on hold in solidarity with the writers:”
“I’m not allowed to discuss it, but I can confirm that we have been meeting. In support of the writers, we have halted the meetings.Although there have been several conversations, they are still in their very early phases,” Holland stated.
The WGA strike has no end in sight, which may mean negotiations for Spider-Man 4 between the star, Sony Pictures, and Marvel Studios are put on hold for a considerable amount of time.
The release date for Spider-Man 4 has not yet been confirmed, but if these discussions drag on, it’s possible that the studios will move forward whatever date they had originally planned.
It was previously reported that a July 12, 2024 release date for the wall-crawling was being considered; however, given the delay in development (and how closely it follows Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts), it seems improbable anymore.
Right now, a 2024 release date for Tom Holland’s upcoming web-headed movie seems quite implausible.
Perhaps Spider-Man 4 will be released on one of the MCU’s open release dates in 2025.
Although the studios might try to release the movie for the currently vacant July 26, 2025 window, it appears more likely (given the WGA delay) that it will instead be released on November 7, 2025.
But for the time being, Tom Holland and the Spider-Man 4 team must wait for the writers’ labour conflict to be resolved, much like the rest of Hollywood.
