Kate Mulgrew is an American actress best known for her roles in the television series Star Trek: Voyager and Orange Is the New Black. Mulgrew was born in Dubuque, Iowa in on 29th April, 1955. She attended Catholic school and then studied at the Stella Adler Conservatory in New York.
She made her Broadway debut in 1974 in the musical “Man of La Mancha” and then moved on to star in the play “Our Town”. She made her feature film debut in 1983’s “Heartbreakers” and also starred in “Throw Momma from the Train”.
Mulgrew is best known for her roles in the television series Star Trek: Voyager and Orange Is the New Black. She starred as Kathryn Janeway in Star Trek: Voyager from 1995 to 2001. Her portrayal of the first female captain of a Star Trek series earned her critical acclaim and a Saturn Award for Best Actress in a Television Series. She earned an Emmy Award nomination for her role as Galina “Red” Reznikov in Orange Is the New Black.
Mulgrew has also appeared in films such as “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel”, “American Experience”, “Boys on the Side”, “Tea with Mussolini”, “The Heart of Justice”, “Mrs. Harris” and “The Book of Ruth”. She has also had roles in television series such as “Will & Grace”, “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit”, “Leverage”, and “NCIS”. Mulgrew has also had a successful career in the theater.
She has appeared in Broadway productions of “Equus”, “Agnes of God”, and “The Exonerated”, among others. She has also appeared in numerous off-Broadway and regional theater productions. Mulgrew is an active philanthropist and has served on the boards of numerous charities.
She is the founder of the Kate Mulgrew Awards, which recognizes emerging theater talent.
