10th May 2023, Mumbai: The John Wick film series, starring Keanu Reeves, has gained significant acclaim for its impressive action sequences and unique storyline. It is considered to be a comeback for Reeves, who delivers a stellar performance in his role as the titular character. The films have also been praised for their portrayal of a criminal underworld, complete with its own rituals and rules, which adds depth to the narrative.
Following the release of John Wick 4 earlier this year, which received positive reviews from critics and became the franchise’s highest-grossing film, fans eagerly await the fifth installment. However, director Chad Stahelski has expressed his reservations about the idea of making another film. He believes that it is essential to maintain individuality and avoid repetition while also meeting the demands of the business.
Stahelski acknowledges that there is a temptation to continue a successful franchise, but the challenge lies in adding a unique touch to the story. He believes that the key is to find a way to incorporate one’s own authorship and agency into something that has already been done three times before. While he admits that he wouldn’t mind making John Wick 5, he also feels that the story was wrapped up nicely in Chapter 4.
According to Stahelski, the team worked hard to ensure that they had left everything on the table while making John Wick 4. They put all their ideas and efforts into the film, leaving nothing behind. He believes that they were successful in creating something satisfying and enjoyable, which brought closure to the previous three films. Therefore, he feels that they have completed the cycle and that the story has reached its natural conclusion.
Despite his reservations about making another film, Stahelski has not ruled out the possibility of John Wick 5 entirely. He admits that he is currently exhausted and unable to think about it, but he has a vast collection of ideas for potential set pieces and storylines. He is open to the idea of exploring these ideas if something comes along that will genuinely entertain audiences and not feel like a cash grab.
Stahelski believes that John Wick 4 was a great way to wrap up the story, but he is not entirely closing the door on the possibility of making another film.
