While there were reports of other actors, such as Donald Glover, Ezra Miller, and Ryan Gosling, being considered for the part, it was Chalamet who caught the attention of director Paul King. As a result, Chalamet received a direct offer without having to audition.
Director Paul King’s Confidence in Timothée Chalamet’s Talent Leads to Offered Role

When discussing the project with Chalamet, the actor expressed his enthusiasm for showcasing his tap dancing abilities, having had experience in high school.
“Wonka” Prequel Musical: A Departure from the Wholesome Tone of “Paddington”
Describing “Wonka” as a “proper” musical that pays homage to the golden age of MGM musicals, King emphasized that the film would have a different tone from his previous work on the beloved “Paddington” movies. In contrast to the kind-hearted world of Paddington, “Wonka” takes place in a cruel and mean-spirited city, where Charlie, the main character, grows up. King aimed to incorporate darker and grotesque elements, while still being mindful not to harm the younger audience.
