17 May 2023, Mumbai: Helen Mirren, the renowned actress and L’Oreal ambassador, recently found herself at the centre of controversy during the Cannes Film Festival. Her choice of accessory—an elegant hand-fan featuring the phrase “#WORTHIT”—was misinterpreted as a silent show of support for Amber Heard amidst the ongoing Johnny Depp defamation trial. However, Mirren promptly addressed the misunderstanding, clarifying that her intention was innocent and related to her affiliation with L’Oreal rather than any personal statement.
As Helen Mirren made her way down the red carpet at the premiere of Johnny Depp’s film “Jeanne du Barry,” all eyes were on her unique choice of a beige hand-fan with the words “#WORTHIT” prominently displayed. Many onlookers and media outlets instantly linked this gesture to Amber Heard, given the publicised trial involving Depp and Heard. However, Mirren has since set the record straight regarding her intentions
In an interview with Insider, Helen Mirren candidly explained that her attendance at the premiere was a result of her role as a L’Oreal ambassador. The renowned beauty brand’s tagline, “Because you’re worth it,” served as the inspiration for the fan’s message. Mirren emphasised that her selection of the fan was primarily motivated by the Cannes heat and her desire for relief.
Addressing the misconstrued interpretation, Mirren firmly stated, “No secret message was intended…I am a L’Oreal ambassador. They are a sponsor of the festival, and quite truthfully, I picked up a fan because I was hot. ‘Because You’re Worth It’ is the official L’Oréal Paris slogan.”
It is worth noting that Amber Heard has also had ties to L’Oreal, having been associated with the brand in the past. In fact, Mirren and Heard even walked the runway together during the L’Oreal Paris Fashion Week show in 2021. However, Mirren’s choice of fan should not be misconstrued as an endorsement or statement related to Heard’s personal matters.
