Following the box office smash Gladiator from 2000, Scott is back to direct and produce the sequel. Michael Pruss, Doug Wick, and Lucy Fisher are all attached to produce the Paramount project. The script was written by David Scarpa. Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, and Conie Nielsen played the key roles in the original. Crowe portrayed Maximus, a Roman general turned gladiator who exacted revenge on those responsible for the deaths of his children and wife.
The sequel will centre on Lucius (Mescal), the nephew of Commodus and the son of Lucilla (Nielsen), and it will take place years after the events of the first movie (Phoenix). Maximus overcame Commodus in battle, saving Lucius and Lucilla, but he too perished from his wounds, allowing him to finally meet his dead wife and son in the afterlife. Keoghan is negotiating to take on the role of Emperor Geta. The movie’s release date is set for November 22, 2024. For his role in The Banshees of Inisherin, Keoghan was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar at the 95th Academy Awards, while Mescal was up for the Best Actor honour for Aftersun.
