11 June 2023, Mumbai: At the recent book launch event for “Irrfan Khan: A Life in Movies,” Sutapa Sikdar, the wife of the late actor Irrfan Khan, took the stage and shared a heartwarming anecdote about their early days together. She fondly recalled how she ragged Irrfan when they first met in college. Irrfan Khan’s untimely demise on April 29, 2020, left a void in the hearts of many. Survived by his wife Sutapa Sikdar and two sons, Babil and Ayan, Irrfan’s legacy as an exceptional actor continues to inspire. The love story between Irrfan and Sutapa began during their time as classmates at the National School of Drama (NSD) in Delhi. Their shared passion for cinema and art fueled their deep discussions, ultimately leading to their marriage on February 23, 1995.
During the book launch, Sutapa Sikdar shared a delightful and lighthearted memory of their college days. She revealed that she first met Irrfan at NSD when he approached her for directions. However, mischievously, she intentionally misguided him and even claimed to be his senior. Recalling the incident, Sutapa said, “He had this seriousness, and I knew this. So, I ragged him.” Sutapa playfully guided Irrfan to a completely different location when he asked for directions. When they finally met, Sutapa questioned Irrfan, saying, “Why do you think you belong here?” Irrfan calmly replied, “I have also performed in plays.” Irrfan’s honesty was of utmost importance to him, and he expressed his disappointment with Sutapa’s playful prank. He remarked, “You are not even a third-year student.” To which Sutapa cheekily responded, “I didn’t say anything; you believed I am in the third year.”
Sutapa Sikdar, a film dialogue writer and producer herself, worked on notable films such as Khamoshi, Shabd, and Kahaani. In 2018, Irrfan was diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumor, which dramatically changed their lives. Irrfan sought treatment in London, accompanied by his family, putting his thriving film career on hold. After a year of intensive treatment, Irrfan returned to India and completed work on Angrezi Medium, his final on-screen performance. Tragically, on April 29, 2020, Irrfan Khan passed away, leaving behind a profound legacy.
