22nd April,2024, Mumbai: There are seldom times when heroes’ brave stories are immortalised on screens in the world of contemporary entertainment, when heroes frequently go unnoticed. One such tale is about to be revealed by master storyteller Santosh Singh through his next series, “Ranneeti: Balakot & Beyond.” The director now discusses his series in detail, offering perspectives that go beyond simple filmmaking.
Santosh Singh reveals the inner workings of his creative process provides moving insights!
The mastermind behind this enormous undertaking, director Santosh Singh, reveals the inner workings of his creative process and provides moving insights into the creation of this series. The television series “Ranneeti: Balakot and Beyond” is based on real events, specifically the Pulwama bombing and the events that followed, which led to the Balakot airstrikes and the aerial combat that resumed between India and Pakistan after a 50-year break. Even while these events happened in front of our eyes, many people are unaware of the preparation, strategy, and execution that went on behind closed doors in the war rooms. The struggle between perception and story, the drama playing out behind closed doors, is what captivated me and gave me the idea for this series.” Asserts Singh.
‘The drama that is ingrained in the events themselves is what provides entertainment’ Says Santosh
“When you claim that your film or show draws inspiration from real events, there’s a heightened expectation from the audience regarding its credibility and authenticity, particularly when it involves our armed forces and defence establishment,” Singh says, addressing the difficult task of navigating conflicting versions of history while discussing authenticity and the pursuit of truth. Santosh goes on, “The drama that is ingrained in the events themselves is what provides entertainment.” This is more real than any dramatised screenplay, therefore we just tried to portray it truthfully. We tried to keep the narrative clear-cut, uncomplicated, and as true to reality as we could. We adopted a realistic stance by suggesting that this story lacks a definite antagonist. It concerns two nations and their citizens, each acting to ensure the security of their own country. We were able to authentically and meaningfully capture the feelings by looking at them through this lens.

Santosh talks candidly on the difficulties of accurately portraying the Pulwama bus explosion
“As a director, there’s no margin for error in such a sensitive narrative space,” the man continues. There exist differing accounts of what transpired because the events leading up to this entire episode are classified. Consequently, the most challenging duty was carrying out in-depth research and identifying the most appropriate portrayal. Our writers had a difficult time getting through numerous iterations until we reached the degree of realism and accuracy needed to do this kind of story right.
Looking back on the significance of a single scene, Santosh talks candidly on the difficulties of accurately portraying the Pulwama bus explosion. “Reenacting the Pulwama bus explosion and filming the aftermath—the sight of the dead soldiers—was one moment that really affected me.” The entire team was wrapped in a gloomy hush, and the emotions on set were evident,” he relates. “It was difficult to comprehend the magnitude of grief.”
Santosh feels blessed and fortunate enough to have a group of talented people that bring his vision to life.
Regarding the ensemble cast, the filmmaker considers himself fortunate to have a group of talented people that bring his vision to life. It is indeed a blessing for me to have such a wonderful cast for “Ranneeti: Balakot & Beyond.” The group that my creative team and I were able to assemble included Jimmy Shergill, Lara Dutta, Ashutosh Rana, Ashish Vidyarthi, Prasanna, Satyajeet Dubey, Akansha Singh, and Elnaz Nourozi. They have a lot of pleasant vibes and enthusiasm in addition to being superb actors. This dynamic was essential to achieving the show’s intended magnitude. We always thought Jimmy Shergill would be the best fit for the part, and the show will illustrate why. We considered a few people for Lara Dutta’s role, but she was the one that really caught our attention. We were looking for someone with her kind of personality—someone who is really strong. She proved to be an incredible pleasure to work with, and we were unrelenting in our efforts to get her on board.
