18 October 2023, Mumbai: A wave of controversy has surrounded the release of Vijay’s highly anticipated film, “Leo,” even before it hits the screens. In an unfortunate incident, fans of the actor vandalized a theatre in Chennai during the trailer screening of “Leo.” The aftermath of this incident has resulted in a decision to ban teaser and trailer celebrations within movie theatres, disrupting a long-standing tradition among Vijay’s fans.
LEO Early Morning Show Restrictions:
Not only did the fan-led vandalism prompt action from theatre owners, but it also influenced the government’s stance on early morning shows for “Leo” in Tamil Nadu. The government has denied permission for 4 am or 7 am shows for the film, which will now only be screened in theatres at 9 am on October 19. This decision marks a significant shift from the usual practice of early morning shows, especially for highly anticipated releases.
Chaos in the Theatre For LEO:
The incident at the heart of this decision occurred when Vijay’s fans engaged in destructive behavior during the trailer screening of “Leo” at a theatre in Chennai. The fans reportedly tore seat covers and dismantled seats, causing significant damage. In response to these actions, film trade analyst Manobala Vijayabalan shared images of the damaged theatre seats on Tuesday, stating, “Rohini Cinemas completely thrashed by Joseph Vijay fans after #LeoTrailer screening.”
Ban on LEO Trailer Celebrations:
In the wake of the Chennai theatre incident, theatre owners, through their association’s president, have decided to stop hosting teaser and trailer celebrations within theatres. This decision reflects their response to the destruction caused by Vijay’s fans during the “Leo” trailer launch celebration. Consequently, future trailer events in theatres will no longer be allowed.
High Court’s Decision and LEO Show Timing:
To enhance the excitement surrounding the release of “Leo,” Seven Screen Studios Production filed a petition before the Madras High Court, requesting permission to screen the film at 4 am on its release day in Tamil Nadu. However, Justice Anita Sumanth refrained from issuing orders regarding the 4 am shows. The court also directed the Tamil Nadu government to reconsider its decision to disallow 7 am shows for the film.
However, Manobala Vijayabalan confirmed in a subsequent tweet that the government has declined the Madras High Court’s reconsideration on 7 am shows for “Leo.” Consequently, there will be no 4 am or 7 am shows for “Leo,” and the film’s first show, as per earlier regulations, will commence at 9 am. “Leo” is directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and marks the reunion of the director and Vijay after their 2021 blockbuster, “Master.” The film also features Trisha Krishnan, reuniting her with Vijay, and stars Sanjay Dutt in a pivotal role, making it one of the most awaited releases of the year.
