20th June 2023,Mumbai: “Cinema is all about evolution, and it has unquestionably improved. And I’m overjoyed to have been a part of this evolution’s beginning. It’s encouraging to see how far the business has come since a while ago,” says the actor who portrayed Sonam Kapoor’s love interest in the 2018 film Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga.
The movie, directed by Shelly Chopra Dhar, delved into the delicate subject of same-sex relationships and challenged societal norms by showcasing LGBTQ+ experiences. Regina Cassandra, who played the character of Kuhu, believes that films have the power to shape perspectives and influence society.
The actor acknowledges that there has always been a portion of the public that has acted as an ally to the LGBTQIA+ community, even before such content gained prominence in the movie industry. However, she emphasizes that there is a noticeable increase in the number of people who are now aware of and supportive of these societal issues. This shift in acceptance can be attributed, in part, to the representation of LGBTQ+ characters and stories in film.
Regina Cassandra firmly believes that by bringing LGBTQ+ stories to the forefront, the movie industry can contribute to the cause of inclusivity and foster a more accepting society. She recalls a special moment that reaffirmed the impact of her role in Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga. “A girl from the North-East approached me and claimed that the movie was her lesbian awakening. That my role truly had an effect on a group of people made me incredibly happy,” she shares. Her character, Kuhu, was depicted as someone who had a loving and accepting family, which provided more opportunities for self-exploration and acceptance of her own sexuality. Regina Cassandra believes that such portrayals inspire individuals to speak up for themselves and find the courage to embrace their own identities. She acknowledges that the journey may not be easy, but encourages everyone to persevere and recognize that their story is worth sharing.
In recent years, there has been a notable increase in LGBTQ+ representation in cinema, with more films exploring diverse sexual orientations and gender identities. This shift reflects society’s evolving acceptance and understanding of the LGBTQ+ community. Regina Cassandra’s involvement in Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga and her perspective on the impact of LGBTQ+ content highlight the role of film in shaping cultural attitudes and promoting inclusivity.
As the entertainment industry continues to evolve, it is crucial to recognize and celebrate the progress made in LGBTQ+ representation while advocating for even greater visibility and acceptance. The experiences and stories shared through film have the power to touch hearts, challenge prejudices, and inspire societal change. And with each new film that embraces diversity, the journey towards a more inclusive world takes a significant step forward.
