The popular actor-politician, Vijayakanth passes away on 28th december 2023 after being treated for pneumonia. He has been ill and sick from past few years and that was also the reason for his low profile and rare mass presence in the recent years.
Popular called as Captain by his followers and fans for his various roles as military man in Tamil films, he constructed a whole party in opposition to already present AIADMK and DMK party of Tamil Nadu.
He was admitted to the hospital on 14th december, after which his wife took reigns of the party. Since then he was constantly ill and on 28th december, he died.
Talking about his political career, he founded his party Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) in 2005. At his first test, that is the 2006 Tamil Nadu State Legislative assembly elections, his party won only one seat which was of Vijayakanth himself. It was from Virudhachalam constituency. In 2009 elections, they contested on 40 seats and won none. It was the 2011 elections when they won significant number of seats making them the leading oppositon party in the state assembly. Vijayakanth became the opposition leader, the first actor turned politician to do so. In 2014, they contested in alliance with BJP under the umbrella of NDA and again won, hinting at rise of their power in the state.
But due to constant infighting in the party, the decline started leading to worsening of their situation as a party in the state.
PM Modi poured in his condolescences after the demise of Vijayakanth. He too applauded the life of the leader. “Extremely saddened by the passing away of Thiru Vijayakanth Ji,” the prime minister said in a social media post.” A legend of the Tamil film world, his charismatic performances captured the hearts of millions. As a political leader, he was deeply committed to public service, leaving a lasting impact on Tamil Nadu’s political landscape,” he added. “His passing leaves a void that will be hard to fill. He was a close friend and I fondly recall my interactions with him over the years. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with his family, fans and numerous followers. Om Shanti”, He concluded his post.
