25th April 2023, Mumbai: On Wednesday, a video of DJ Ali Merchant, a former reality show contestant, went viral on social media. In the clip, Merchant halted his performance as the Azaan, the Islamic call to prayer, began playing nearby. Merchant claimed that it was the first time he had ever done something like this, despite his set starting almost 30 minutes before the Azaan. He expressed that during the month of Ramzan, it is crucial to show respect to the Azaan.
Merchant shared that when he halted his music during the Azaan, there were some individuals in the crowd who trolled him, accusing him of being afraid. However, he confidently responded that he was only afraid of God. He recalled that everyone, including producers and organisers, was initially shocked by his action, but eventually, they respected and valued his decision. Merchant acknowledged that stopping a gig during Azaan is a personal choice, but he urged others to do the same as it demonstrates respect for religion. He admitted that earlier in his career, he may have been concerned about what people would say or think, but now he was not afraid to do what he believed was right.
During his gig, Merchant mentioned that there were around four to five thousand people in the audience who fell silent when the Azaan started playing.
Merchant shared that while he observes the fast during Ramzan, he continues to work despite the events being hectic and stressful. He believes in balancing his religious obligations with his professional commitments in the world of entertainment. He mentioned that he managed to break his fast and drink water on stage during his gig. Merchant explained that he has been accustomed to fasting during Ramzan since childhood, and these habits help him smoothly navigate through the month. He appreciated the crowd in Pune, where the event took place, for their understanding and maturity in respecting all religions, which he found very admirable. He concluded by expressing his gratitude.
