Today, seeing a movie in a theatre would be incomplete without eating popcorn, samosas, or other snacks or drinking anything. The amount of samosas, popcorn, cold beverages, etc. served everyday at theatres must be significant with so many people seeing movies every day. And Inox today, for the first time, presented an intriguing report in this respect that provides not only a city-by-city comparison of the F&B sales at their 167 movie halls throughout the 74 cities of India, but also offers a decent notion about the quantity of food and beverage units sold.
A staggering 863 tonnes of popcorn were sold, 7.88 of which were sold in Mumbai. Actually, Mumbai customers consumed more popcorn than those in 29 other cities, including Mysuru, Nagpur, Kolhapur, Belgaum, Nashik, Ghaziabad, Kanpur, etc. Samosa sales totaled 19.38 lakh during the course of the year. The three major Southern cities of Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad accounted for 10.70% of samosa sales. People now frequently eat fries as a movie snack. The fact that 82 tonnes of fries were sold this year is proof of this.
Despite the fact that Inox omitted the exact quantity of nacho plates sold, it did state that the weight of the nachos sold was equal to 2.5 Boeing 737-800 aeroplanes. In another section of the report, it is said that Bengaluru’s Inox theatres sold 11.25% of the company’s nachos. Visitors to Inox theatres inhaled 3,38,859 puffs. Intriguingly, three South Asian cities—Chennai, Madurai, and Salem—all in the state of Tamil Nadu, sold up to 55% of all puffs sold worldwide.
Cold beverages totaling up to 38.15 lakh litres were sold. With 3.43 lakh litres, Kolkata topped the list of cities where consumers drank the most soft drinks. Watching a movie while drinking tea or coffee in an air-conditioned cinema is also enjoyable. The network of multiplexes sold 20.28 lakh cups of hot drinks in 2022. Moviegoers purchased 5.16 lakh sandwiches, 2.86 lakh burgers, and 1.74 lakh burgers. Before places like Lucknow, Gurgaon, Pune, and Delhi, Madurai and Salem were among the top ten sandwich-eating cities. The consumption of burgers in Vizag exceeded that in Mumbai, Lucknow, Gurgaon, and Kolkata, which was a surprise.
Chinese cuisine are now often offered at the F&B counters. More than 40,000 plates of noodles and fried rice as well as 10.96 lakh pieces of dim sum were sold. Once more, Kolkata tops the list of cities with the highest number of momo eaters. 2.21 lakh of them were sold in the Inox theatres in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal.
