10th June 2023, Mumbai: Netflix’s original series “Scoop,” featuring Karishma Tanna, Harman Baweja, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, and Prasenjit Chatterjee, takes inspiration from former journalist Jigna Vora’s book, “Behind Bars in Byculla: My Days In Prison.” Renowned creator and director Hansal Mehta recently shared some intriguing behind-the-scenes anecdotes from the filming process of the series in an IMDb Exclusive interview.
Mehta expressed his fascination with exploring the world of a Gujarati joint family in “Scoop.” The series delves into the aspirations and ambitions that arise within this close-knit unit, providing a unique perspective on our contemporary society through the journey of Jagruti Pathak. Jagruti, an ambitious journalist who seeks a captivating story at any cost, becomes the focal point of the narrative. Mehta emphasized that the series examines the themes of ambition and aspiration, offering room for introspection. He also mentioned his instinctive approach to storytelling, granting freedom to his team members to unleash their creativity.
Among the memorable scenes, Mehta highlighted one in which Jagruti watches herself being disgraced on television. As the scene concluded, Mehta vividly recalled his enthusiasm, screaming “Pathak! Pathak!” while being accompanied by 300 women also raising their voices. This moment captured the voyeuristic pleasure derived from intruding into someone’s private life. Mehta acknowledged that many of the remarkable moments in his work are often unplanned, adding an element of spontaneity to the storytelling process.
Discussing his approach to selecting stories, Mehta emphasized his preference for narratives that resonate with contemporary times. He recognized the pervasive influence of social media, which has become a powerful tool for passing judgments and reflects the era we live in. Mehta pointed out that the focus often lies on the crime rather than the subsequent acquittal, with an eagerness to uncover unexpected culprits.
When asked how he would summarize himself in a headline, Mehta humorously responded, “A Man Who Knows Nothing.” This lighthearted remark reflects his humility and willingness to remain open to new perspectives and experiences.
