14th March, Mumbai: Whether “worship of youth, of perfection, of overstraining in K-pop” are cultural features of South Korea, BTS frontman RM has answered. In a recent interview, RM said that people in Korea work “hard to improve themselves” and likened the country’s current state to that of seven decades ago. Additionally, he claimed that Westerners “simply don’t grasp it.”
According to reports, the K-pop industry is a competitive one. In order to compete successfully, K-pop idols must undergo years of intensive preparation. The pressure to perform well is great for K-pop stars even after their debut.
RM remarked in an interview with El Pais, “The West simply doesn’t understand it. Korea has experienced invasion, destruction, and division. There was nothing just 70 years ago. We were receiving assistance from the UN and IMF. Yet right now, Korea is in the spotlight worldwide. How was that feasible and how did it occur? because everyone is trying extremely hard to better themselves.”
“You come to me saying, “My God, you put so much strain on yourself, life in Korea is so stressful! “, when you are in France or the UK, nations that have been colonising people for ages. Ok, sure. That is how things are accomplished. And it contributes to why K-pop is so enticing. Although there are certainly shadows, anything that happens too quickly and too intensely has negative consequences, he continued.” he further commented.
RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook make up the K-pop group BTS. With the release of the single album 2 Cool 4 School in 2013, the group made its debut. Dark & Wild and Wake Up, BTS’s debut studio albums in both Korean and Japanese, were released in 2014. Youth, Wings, Love Yourself: Tear, Map of the Soul: Seven, and Be are just a few of the albums that BTS has so far published.
BTS launched their album Proof in June of last year. It was their final release before the group decided to enlist in the South Korean military. While J-Hope has started the application process for required military service, BTS’ oldest member Jin is presently serving in the Army.
