Since its debut on Netflix last week, the movie Monica O My Darling starring Rajkummar Rao and Huma Qureshi has garnered favourable reviews. It was entertaining to spot different cinema references throughout the twisted dark comedy’s running duration. The movie features a lot that can be missed after only one viewing, including cameos by Abhimanyu Dassani and Radhika Madan.
The movie, which was directed by Vasan Bala, is about a robotics expert named Jayant Arkhedkar (Rajkummar Rao), who tries to carry out a meticulous murder with the aid of his eccentric coworkers but ends up in a mess. Radhika Apte, Sikandar Kher, Zayn Marie Khan, Akansha Ranjan Kapoor, and Sukant Goel are also featured in the dark comedy drama.
Numerous references to Bollywood and Hollywood were included in the movie after it was released on Netflix. Additionally, IMDB posted some of them on Instagram. Abhimanyu Dassani, who made his Bollywood debut in Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota by Vasan Bala in 2018, was spotted drinking water while working as one of the company’s employees. In the 2018 movie with him, Radhika played the part of Supri, a photographer who accidentally discovered a dead body.
The list of different directors, including Anurag Kashyap, Abbas Mastan, Quentin Tarantino, and Vishal Bharadwaj, along with their house numbers, may be seen in the movie if the viewer genuinely pauses the video at the scene where Zayn Marie Khan’s Shalu is on the phone outside her home. But hardly anyone paid attention to the name Sarika Vartak, which is actually the name of the character played by Urmila Matondkar in the movie Ek Hasina Thi and is not a filmmaker.
The robotic device used by Rajkummar also made us think of Dr Octopus, the villainous robot from Spider-Man. Lines from a scene by Huma Qureshi brought to mind Tabu’s from Maqbool. Huma compared Hotel Prince to the Bates Motel from the movie Psycho. Amars with the name of the Jewel Thief character played by Dev Anand have also been seen.
Many were surprised by the references and reacted to the same on social media. A viewer wrote, “There is no Easter eggs in this movie. The movie is in the Easter eggs (an artificial chocolate egg given at Easter).” Another said, “Vansal Bala is literally a FILM FAN.” One more commented, “Its like Mona Lisa.. har angle se kuch naya mil hi jayega (something new will be found on seeing from a different angle).”
