The Risk of Leaving Television
Parents were taken aback by Massey’s choice to quit television, even if he was well-paid. He was making an incredible ₹35 lakh a month at the age of 24, which was a substantial sum for someone from a middle-class family. However, Massey bravely decided to enter the uncharted world of filmmaking because he was motivated to achieve high-quality work and attain inner serenity.
Struggles and Setbacks
The transition to films was not without its challenges, and Massey faced a period of financial uncertainty. Within a year, he had depleted his savings and had to rely on his then-girlfriend, now-wife Sheetal, for pocket money to attend auditions. Despite the setbacks, Massey remained steadfast in his determination to succeed in the film industry.
Breakthrough and Recognition
Massey’s persistence paid off when he was able to secure important parts in movies such as Dil Dhadakne Do (2015) and Lootera (2013), which helped him become known in the business. But the highly regarded 2017 film A Death in the Gunj, which demonstrated his acting talent and provided doors to further significant opportunities in movies and web series, was his real breakthrough.
Success and Acclaim
In 2023, Massey starred in Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s 12th Fail, which emerged as a sleeper hit, grossing over Rs 69 crore at the box office. His diverse roles in projects like Chhapaak, Haseen Dilruba, and the web series Mirzapur further solidified his reputation as a versatile and talented actor.
