In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, he shared in-depth about his just released web series, Dharavi Bank, which also stars Suniel Shetty. The actor, who completed 20 years in bollywood earlier this year, spoke openly about his journey as well as other topics.
You must be receiving many offers. Additionally, you’ve been quite picky. Why did you agree to join Dharavi Bank?
Since Inside Edge was a success, I’ve been lucky to get offers about once every 10 days. People approach me and say, “Yeh parcel hai. This show has a banayenge theme! Never have I pursued that. This media, which I consider to be the most democratic, commands a reverence that is excessive. Here, only brilliance thrives. If the substance is weak, even the biggest stars risk being rejected. Additionally, even the most unknown actors can receive great praise for their efforts. I jumped to OTT first among major actors six years ago, and yeah, I’ve been picky.
This is your third time acting as a cop. In the past, you appeared as a police officer in the Kannada movies Rustum and Bank Chor (2017). (2019). How can you make sure your police role doesn’t like any others?
Yes, the thought is that I’ve already played a cop and don’t want to do it again. Second, we have seen famous actors play police officers. Also, you don’t want to repeat that. So, it does become challenging. First and foremost, I wanted Jayant, the character I played in Dharavi Bank, to look the part. So I had to make sure he worked 15 to 16 hours every day and looked like he was in his 40s. He’s a tough guy, but he’s not physically fit, and he doesn’t work out for four hours every day. He’s not an officer with a six-pack! Something more substantial exists. Understanding Jayant Gavaskar conceptually was the second step. I create the backstories for each of my complex characters. With Vikrant Dhawan, a character I played in Inside Edge, I did the same. What I mean is that I write the character biographies before their first appearance in the series! It’s for my own use only. I make an effort to comprehend the life of my character, how he would have met his wife, how he fell in love, etc.
