Introduction
The romance between Aamir Khan, a renowned Bollywood actor, and Kiran Rao, an acclaimed director, has always been a topic of fascination for fans and critics. The couple’s relationship kick-started amidst a flurry of rumors, speculations, and controversies, particularly related to Aamir’s first marriage to Reena Dutta. However, Kiran has recently come forward to put some of these misconceptions to rest.
The Rumors
The common narrative suggested that Aamir and Kiran’s relationship blossomed during the making of the epic film ‘Lagaan’ in 2001. The fact that Aamir’s divorce from his first wife, Reena Dutta, came shortly after the film’s release in 2002 only added fuel to the speculative fire. Many believed that Kiran was the ‘other woman’ who caused the end of Aamir’s first marriage.
Kiran Rao’s Clarification
In a recent interview, Kiran Rao addressed these rumors head-on. She clarified that she and Aamir were not romantically involved during the making of ‘Lagaan’. Instead, their relationship began a few years later, around 2004, during the making of ‘Swades’.
The Real Timeline
Kiran stated, “Aamir and I got together during Swades, he was going to shoot Mangal Pandey at the time. We had just shot a couple of commercials with Ashutosh Gowariker for Coke and that is where Aamir and I reconnected. 3-4 years after Lagaan. I was not in touch with him during Lagaan. In fact, on Lagaan, I barely spoke to him. I was actually seeing somebody else during Lagaan. When Aamir and I started going out in 2004, everybody thought that this started when we were shooting for Lagaan and this caused the divorce, which was not the fact.”
The Baggage of Past Relationships
Kiran also underscored the difficulties that come with marrying someone who has been in a previous relationship. She strongly advocated for couple’s counseling, revealing that she and Aamir underwent counseling sessions to navigate their relationship baggage.
The Power of Counseling
“When you marry someone who has been in another relationship, there is a baggage that you bring that will affect your relationship. I strongly recommend couples counseling. It becomes a neutral ground where you talk about your needs, how you see the other person, and that was very beneficial to me,” Kiran said.
The Marriage and Separation
Kiran and Aamir tied the knot in 2005, and they continued to maintain a cordial relationship even after their separation in 2021. They co-parent their son, Azad Rao, and still collaborate professionally. Kiran’s recent directorial venture, ‘Laapataa Ladies’, was co-produced by Aamir.
The story of Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao is a testament to the complexities and challenges of relationships, particularly those that are under the public eye. Despite the rumors and speculations, they have managed to maintain a dignified stand, proving that love and understanding can overcome even the toughest of obstacles.
