July 6, 2023, Mumbai:Huma Qureshi, a renowned Indian actor known for her impactful performances, recently spoke out about religious polarisation in the film industry and affirmed her identity as a Muslim in India. During a candid interaction on a news channel, Huma shared her thoughts on the subject, expressing her confusion about the existence of such divisions.
Huma rose to fame with her breakthrough role in Anurag Kashyap’s critically acclaimed film, “Gangs of Wasseypur,” and has since been recognized for her talent and bold statements. While discussing the topic of polarisation in films during the interview, she responded, “Aaj kal jab mai ye baatein sunti hu toh lagta hai ki ye baatein ho kiu rahi hai?,” which translates to, “I don’t understand where these things are coming from.”
The anchor then explained that these conversations emerged after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the United States, where he was questioned by the media about the rights of Muslims and other minorities in India. The anchor asked Huma if she believed this was the right question to ask.Huma, in her response, emphasised that she had never perceived herself as different or felt her religious identity as a Muslim. She mentioned that her father owns a restaurant called Saleem’s in Kailash Colony, Delhi. While she acknowledged that others might have experienced discrimination, she believes that questions should be raised, and every government should be held accountable to answer them.
Following the release of a video clip from the interview, various internet users expressed their opinions on Huma Qureshi’s statements. Some applauded her response, commending her for addressing the issue and emphasising India’s inclusivity. Others expressed agreement, stating that India is one of the safest countries for people of all backgrounds.
