19th June 2023, Mumbai: Mumbai-based Hindutva outfit, Rashtra Pratham, created chaos at a cinema hall in Nallasopara suburb, Mumbai, by forcibly stopping the screening of Om Raut’s ‘Adipurush.’ The film, which hit theatres on June 16, has been embroiled in controversies, with accusations of insulting the Hindu epic, Ramayana.
‘Adipurush’ presents a retelling of the Ramayana, with Prabhas as Lord Ram, Kriti Sanon as Sita, Saif Ali Khan as Ravan, and Devdatta Nage as Lord Hanuman. However, the film has received widespread criticism for its substandard street-style dialogues and below-par visual effects, causing significant uproar across the country. The incident unfolded in a theatre within the Capital Mall of Nallasopara when members of the Rashtra Pratham group stormed inside, vocally expressing their opposition to the film and its creators. Their disruptive behavior led to the suspension of the film screening. A viral video capturing the incident shows heated arguments between the group members, the audience, and the mall’s management.
The repercussions of ‘Adipurush’ extend beyond the disrupted screening. Director Om Raut and writer Manoj Muntashir have faced death threats from various parts of the country. In Chhattisgarh, effigies of Raut and Muntashir were hung from a tree, and Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel mentioned the possibility of banning the film if demanded by the people. Additionally, the Kshatriya Karni Sena threatened Raut’s life, with the National President of the organization, Dr. Raj Shekhawat, stating their intent to form a team in Mumbai, acquire weapons, and track down the director. The intensity of the controversies surrounding ‘Adipurush’ has escalated, leading to concerns for the safety of the film’s creators.
