11 January 2024, Mumbai: Recently, Hema Malini shared a story about her experience working with Gulzar in a film, specifically the 1975 movie Khushboo. At the launch of Gulzar’s authorized biography in Mumbai, she reminisced about the challenges and unique aspects of collaborating with the veteran filmmaker-lyricist Gulzar Sahab.
Hema Malini in Khushboo
Hema recalled that Gulzar picked her for a role in Khushboo that didn’t require a glamorous appearance, something quite different from the norm at that time. In the 1970s, heroines were often recognized for their elaborate hairstyles and bold makeup. However, Gulzar wanted a natural look for Hema’s character in the film.
Hema Malini not in for glamour?
When she arrived on the set, expecting the usual glamorous styling, Gulzar surprised her by saying, “No wigs, be natural as you are.” Her mother, joining her in the makeup room, was also taken aback when she saw the plain saree and a non-matching blouse. Despite Hema being content with the simplicity, her mother insisted on more glamour. Gulzar firmly rejected the idea, emphasizing minimal makeup and a simple outfit.

Although Hema found it a bit challenging to adjust to this unconventional approach, she eventually enjoyed the experience. Gulzar encouraged her to slow down her speech, a significant change for someone who was used to speaking quickly on camera. When she mentioned having another shoot to attend, Gulzar advised her to speak slowly, prioritizing the current shoot. Being a dancer, Hema often used her eyes to convey emotions, but Gulzar wanted her to control her eyebrow movements. He would request multiple takes until she perfected the subtlety he desired, telling her that her eyebrows seemed to be “dancing.”
Hema Malini refuse Selfie
In a recent video from the event, Hema Malini was seen getting slightly irritated as fans requested selfies. She bluntly said, “We’re not here to take selfies.” However, she later happily posed for the paparazzi. The event, attended by filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj and writer Gulzar, marked the launch of Gulzar’s authorized biography, exploring his extensive contributions to films, songs, stories, poems, and literature. The book, authored by Yatindra Mishra, delves into Gulzar’s multifaceted career and artistic creations.
