12th June 2023, Mumbai: In a passionate appeal on the occasion of World Day Against Child Labour, renowned actor Ayushmann Khurrana, who recently assumed the role of UNICEF’s National Ambassador, called for collective action to end child labour in India. Recognizing the plight of millions of underprivileged children, Khurrana emphasised the urgent need to protect their childhood, potential, and dignity.
Child labour remains a global concern, with numerous children engaged in work that poses physical, mental, social, and moral risks. Khurrana shed light on the adverse consequences of child labour, stating that it hampers their education, limits life opportunities, and exposes them to exploitation, violence, and abuse. He stressed that childhood should be a time for learning, not earning, and every child has the right to a safe and labour-free environment.
Khurrana presented a comprehensive plan to combat child labour, both at an individual and community level. He highlighted the importance of children belonging to schools and playgrounds, emphasising that they flourish in safe and nurturing environments rather than hazardous workplaces. The actor called upon adults to take responsibility for supporting children in staying in school and continuing their education.
Understanding the significance of education, Khurrana emphasised that it builds the foundation of knowledge and skills for a happy childhood and a better future. He also acknowledged the role of vocational training in equipping children with skills that enhance their employability prospects. Khurrana urged society to come together, emphasizing that it is the collective responsibility of every citizen to protect children and eliminate child labour.
As responsible citizens, Khurrana encouraged individuals to refrain from supporting or employing any form of child labour, extending this call to businesses and families as well. He emphasized the importance of reporting instances of child labour to the Child Helpline at 1098 or through the PENCIL (Platform for Effective Enforcement for No Child Labour) portal.
Ayushmann Khurrana’s impassioned plea to end child labour serves as a wake-up call for society. His commitment to raising awareness, combined with his influential position as UNICEF’s National Ambassador, offers hope for a brighter future for underprivileged children in India. By heeding Khurrana’s call and taking concrete action, we can ensure that children are provided with the safe and nurturing environments they deserve, where they can grow, learn, and realise their full potential.
