Anurag Kashyap is hailed as one of the most gifted and insightful filmmakers working today. The 50-year-old, who has directed films like Gangs of Wasseypur, Black Friday, The Lunchbox, and many others, isn’t afraid to express his opinions and call something what it is.
The director recently discussed how Bollywood as an industry is weak and how the South industry is doing well on that front at an event. Anurag responded to a question about the well-known North-South debate by stating that Bollywood’s monoply is now over and that we need to stop thinking of Hindi as having a wider audience because it is simply untrue given the large number of other languages and dialects that are spoken throughout the nation.
Moving on, the director claimed that you no longer need stars or a large cast of performers to produce a film. In fact, he claims that local actors with deep roots are the best, and that’s where other industries, like those in the South, excel above Bollywood. Anurag noted that Bollywood lacks roots and stated that this is an area where the business has to improve.
