27th March is World Theatre day. Actor Vijayendra Kumeria says that the acting ability of an actor needs to be assessed devoid of any medium. While there is a perception that theatre actors act better than screen actors, this might not be true always, says Vijayendra.
“I directly faced the camera for a TV show. Theatre is just a different medium of acting, you can’t say that they are better than actors of other mediums. For me, an actor is an actor,” he says, adding, “To each his own, it’s about interest. Some people enjoy doing it some don’t, there cannot be a specific reason why people are not inclined towards it.”
Due to the various OTT platforms, as well as the pandemic, the theatre industry has been heavily impacted. However, theatre will thrive once again, he says. “People who like to watch theatre will definitely resume going back to watch plays, it’s a matter of time,” he adds.
Ask him what kind of plays he loves and the actor says, “I watched a play in which a friend of mine was performing, to be honest, I haven’t watched much theatre. I watched recordings of a few Gujarati as well as Hindi plays. I can’t pick one but I like comedy theatre more.”
