Marvel Studios has officially revealed who will carry the Black Panther legacy forward. During its Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, director Ryan Coogler announced that British actor David Jonsson will lead Black Panther 3, marking a major new chapter for the Marvel Cinematic Universe nearly six years after Chadwick Boseman's death.
The announcement quickly became one of the biggest moments of the Marvel panel. Fans across social media welcomed the casting news and praised the studio's decision to continue the story by focusing on the next generation of Wakanda. The film is set to arrive in theaters on December 15, 2028.
David Jonsson Confirmed As The New Black Panther
Ryan Coogler appeared on stage alongside Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige to confirm that Black Panther 3 is officially in development. The filmmakers also introduced David Jonsson as the actor who will take on the mantle of Black Panther.
Jonsson will portray Prince T'Challa II, the son and namesake of Chadwick Boseman's T'Challa. The character was first introduced as a child in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and will now step into the spotlight as he comes of age.
Addressing the audience after the announcement, Jonsson received loud cheers and Wakanda chants from fans inside Hall H. On stage, he said, “Thank you to this amazing family that I have the honour and privilege and the blessing to join."
The audience screamed and cheered, with some sections breaking out in Wakanda chants.

Familiar Faces Return For Black Panther 3
Ryan Coogler is returning to direct the third installment of the blockbuster franchise. Leticia Wright will reprise her role as Shuri, while Winston Duke is also set to return as M'Baku.
The film will continue the story of Wakanda after the emotional events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Instead of replacing Chadwick Boseman's original T'Challa, Marvel is moving the franchise forward through his on-screen son, allowing the story to honor the late actor while introducing a new generation of heroes.
Chadwick Boseman's Legacy Continues
Chadwick Boseman was expected to return for a sequel before his death in 2020 following a private battle with colon cancer. His passing led Marvel to reshape its plans for the franchise.
In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, released in 2022, Shuri took up the Black Panther mantle after the death of her brother, T'Challa. The film became both a commercial and critical success, earning more than $850 million worldwide.
The sequel received five Academy Award nominations and won one Oscar. Angela Bassett also made history by becoming the first actor to receive an Academy Award nomination for a performance in a Marvel film.
Black Panther Remains One Of Marvel's Biggest Franchises
Released in 2018, the original Black Panther became a global phenomenon. The film earned more than $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office and featured Chadwick Boseman alongside Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong'o, Michael B. Jordan, Danai Gurira, Angela Bassett and Forrest Whitaker.
The movie received seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, becoming the first superhero film to achieve that milestone. It went on to win three Oscars for Best Costume Design, Best Production Design and Best Original Score.
David Jonsson enters the franchise after gaining attention for his recent performances in The Long Walk and 2024's Alien: Romulus.
