Avengers: Doomsday is already showing signs of becoming a massive box office force months before its theatrical release. The Marvel blockbuster has reportedly pulled in around $100 million in advance ticket sales, putting it on a pace that could lead to a staggering $1 billion global opening weekend.
The early numbers are especially notable because tickets went on sale nearly four months before the film's December 18 release. The huge demand also comes as Marvel prepares to unite the Avengers, Fantastic Four and X-Men in one major multiverse event.
Avengers: Doomsday Presales Fuel $1 Billion Opening Buzz
According to reports from TheWrap, World of Reel and Box Office Theory, Avengers: Doomsday has already generated around $100 million through advance ticket sales.
That figure has fueled early expectations for a huge opening weekend. If the current presales trend continues, the film could potentially approach $1 billion globally in its first weekend.
The $1 billion figure is still an early projection, rather than a confirmed box office target. However, the film's presales are already showing remarkable momentum.
Avengers: Doomsday is reportedly running 65% ahead of the first two days of presales for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The latter became the year's highest-grossing film and crossed the $2 billion mark.
The unusually early ticket sales make the numbers even more notable. Tickets reportedly went on sale nearly four months before release, compared with a typical advance window of around 43 days.
Robert Downey Jr. Returns As Doctor Doom
Another major factor driving interest is Robert Downey Jr.'s return to the MCU. The actor is playing Victor Von Doom, marking a dramatic shift from his iconic role as Tony Stark and Iron Man.
Marvel Studios recently showed fans a closer look at Doom during D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige introduced the footage alongside Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell.
The promo offered a first major glimpse at Doom and teased his confrontation with Chris Hemsworth's Thor. Vanessa Kirby's Sue Storm also featured in the footage.
The story reportedly takes place 14 months after the events of Thunderbolts. Heroes from Earth-616, Earth-828 and other universes are expected to join forces against a threat capable of destroying the multiverse.
At D23, Downey Jr. was asked to choose between Iron Man and Doctor Doom. He picked the villain for now. The actor said, “I will say Doom, for now." He explained that the role gave him a very different experience on set.
He shared, “It was really weird being the guy — everyone else is hanging out, they're the good heroes, and I'm (in) this mask and this hood."
Avengers, Fantastic Four And X-Men Unite
Anthony and Joe Russo are directing Avengers: Doomsday. The film brings together characters from different corners of the Marvel universe for a major multiverse battle.
The ensemble includes Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Paul Rudd, Anthony Mackie, Florence Pugh, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Wyatt Russell and Channing Tatum.
Simu Liu, Ian McKellen, Hayley Atwell, Tom Hiddleston, James Marsden, Patrick Stewart, Joseph Quinn and Sebastian Stan are also part of the cast.
The reported ensemble further includes David Harbour, Letitia Wright, Lewis Pullman, Kelsey Grammer, Kathryn Newton, Danny Ramirez, Winston Duke, Alan Cumming, Hannah John-Kamen, Rebecca Romijn, Mabel Cadena and Tenoch Huerta Mejia.
The crossover is one of the film's biggest draws. It puts major Avengers, Fantastic Four and X-Men characters together as Marvel builds toward the next stage of its multiverse saga.
Avengers: Doomsday Faces Dune: Part Three Clash
Avengers: Doomsday will hit theaters on December 18. That puts it directly against Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Three, which is scheduled for the same day.
The clash could make the December box office especially competitive. Avengers: Doomsday is also reportedly being made on a budget of around $400 million.
Earlier reports have suggested a runtime of approximately 165 minutes, or two hours and 45 minutes. The film is expected to play a major role in Phase Six of the MCU.
Its story will also lead into Avengers: Secret Wars, which is scheduled for December 2027. For now, though, the biggest question is whether the extraordinary presales momentum can translate into the enormous opening weekend currently being projected.
