20th March, Mumbai: Superman: Legacy centres on his quest to understand both his royal Kryptonian ancestry and his small-town upbringing in the Midwest as Clark Kent. A Superman movie is being directed by James Gunn. The release date for Superman: Legacy, which Gunn co-wrote with Peter Safran, was similarly scheduled for July 11, 2025, the two men said on Wednesday. Recently, there has been some uncertainty over Superman’s legacy. Henry Cavill said in October that he would be taking over the part again, beginning with a cameo in Black Adam. But, Cavill announced his coming out on social media two months later. Cavill tweeted, “This news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life. “The changing of the guard is a regular occurrence. I honour that. James and Peter need to create a universe. Just a few days after Black Adam’s October release, Gunn and Safran were named the new DC executives to take over for Walter Hamada, who had led the company for the previous four years. One of the casualties of the new guard was Cavill, who played Superman. It’s been a long journey to get here, Gunn tweeted on Wednesday. I once turned down the offer to play Superman because I didn’t have a special, enjoyable, or emotional way in that would have given the character the respect he deserved. Then, a little over a year ago, I discovered a pathway. The publication date coincides with the birthday of Gunn’s late father, he added.
Gunn stated, “He was my best friend. He didn’t understand me when I was a child, but he encouraged my passion of comic books and movies, and without him, I wouldn’t be doing this movie right now.
James Gunn has been the unusual director that alternates between both DC and Marvel movies for a number of years. After helming Marvel’s acclaimed Guardians of the Galaxy movies, he initially joined DC. The Suicide Squad, a blockbuster sequel to David Ayer’s widely panned Suicide Squad, was directed by Gunn after the Walt Disney Co. temporarily fired him over past tweets that made fun of rape and paedophilia.
He and the seasoned producer Safran joined the team while several future DC movies, such as Shazam! Fury of the Gods (out March 17), The Flash (out June 16), and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, were already on their way to theatres (Dec. 25). Additionally, he still has David Ayer’s widely panned Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 coming out on May 5.
The first movie in the updated, interconnected DC Universe will be Superman: Legacy, which will be followed by Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II, which will debut in October 2025. Like Todd Phillips’ Joker sequel scheduled for 2024, the movie will not take place in the DC Universe.
