Gurmeet Singh on Casting and Why a Director’s First Choice Is Not Always Final

While filming is an uncertain business, a director’s first choice of any actor for a role is not always their final pick.

During his conversation with Rahul Varun on The Filmy Charcha Podcast, Gurmeet Singh spoke of the reality of directors whose casting plans fall by the wayside and explored how a different choice could bring a different energy to the role and its performance.

A casting decision is not always made to secure an actor who fits the image the director has for the role but rather an individual who they believe will be able to interpret the character, work with the rest of the production and deliver a performance that matches the film or series as a whole.

The Possibility of an Unexpected Performance

While not securing their first choice of casting could be viewed as a disappointment, the presence of another performer in the role can lead the filmmaker to a version of the character and story that they may not have anticipated.

A different mannerisms, instincts and interpretation of the material can lead to a performance that surprises the creator and takes the character beyond what was first imagined.

This is the reason why casting cannot always be viewed as a predictable business – an actor that fits in well with the image the director has in mind for the role may not always be the best fit beyond the early stages of production. The same can be said of a performer who was not the first choice but who can be a revelation in the role.

For a long series that requires a number of regulars to remain consistent, such as Mirzapur, the casting and performances can influence the relationships between the characters and their respective arcs.

Keeping the Vision While Being Open to Different Possibilities

Singh’s comments highlight one of the difficulties that directors face when making casting decisions – the need to keep the vision for a character front-of-mind but being open to different options when necessary.

A director’s choice should not be dismissed without thought but they should also be aware that a different approach can be more fitting to the production as a whole and its needs.

Making a casting decision, then, is a matter of preparation and being open to alternative solutions.

A director may begin with one idea in mind but ultimately the most fitting choice will serve the production and its requirements just as well as the original option may have. Likewise, an unexpected choice can allow them to discover a performance that they may not have found otherwise.
