26 May 2023, Mumbai: Remakes have become a common trend in the Hindi film industry, and it seems like filmmakers are not ready to let go of this fascination just yet. Despite recent box office disappointments, several South Indian movie remakes are currently in development, including one by Phantom Studios. Among these, the remake of the Tamil blockbuster Love Today has garnered significant attention.
Tamil Film Remake
Love Today, directed by Pradeep Ranganathan, was both a critical and commercial success, crossing the 100-crore mark at the box office. The production banner, in association with the original producers, AGS Entertainment, announced the remake of this romantic comedy just in February of this year. Now, after three months of speculation, the makers have officially confirmed the cast for the film. According to Peepingmoon.com, the much-awaited Love Today remake will star Junaid Khan, son of renowned actor Aamir Khan, and Khushi Kapoor, the younger daughter of the late Sridevi and producer Boney Kapoor. The duo will portray a deeply in-love young couple in this quirky romantic drama, reprising the roles played by Pradeep Ranganathan and Ivana in the original.
Just another Remake or Blockbusters?
While the casting for other pivotal roles is still underway, sources suggest that the selection process will be finalized by next month. Renowned director Advait Chandan, known for films like Secret Superstar and Laal Singh Chaddha, has been roped in to helm this remake. Reportedly, he has already begun preparations for the production, scheduled to commence in July 2023. Insiders from the industry believe that Junaid and Khushi are the perfect fit for this movie. The story, set in today’s technologically advanced world, offers an entertaining take on modern love and explores the emotional trials faced by families. The filmmakers have made certain adjustments to cater to Hindi-speaking audiences, making it more mainstream while retaining the core themes of the original.
Junaid will make his acting debut in Yash Raj Films’ Siddharth P. It is worth noting that the Love Today remake will be Khushi’s theatrical debut, as her first film premieres directly on Netflix. Following in the footsteps of her elder sister Janhvi Kapoor, who made her debut with the remake film Dhadak, Khushi is set to carve her own path in the industry. Unlike Dhadak, which delved into the struggles caused by casteism, Love Today offers a light-hearted narrative that explores the chaos that ensues when a couple swaps their phones for a day to test their relationship.
