On Wednesday, the world’s largest streaming service Netflix revealed the trailer for its four-part documentary series The Romantics. According to rumours, the television show is a celebration of Yash Chopra’s and Yash Raj Films’ films. The Netflix original series, directed by Smriti Mundhra of Indian Matchmaking fame, will debut on February 14.
The trailer provides a sneak peek at three generations of performers discussing the late director Yash Chopra, including Rishi Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Ranbir Kapoor, Abhishek Bachchan, Bhumi Pednekar, and Ranveer Singh. Salim Khan and Ranbir Kapoor express their distaste for the term “Bollywood” in the trailer’s opening moments. We are teased by the appearance of celebrities who have worked and flourished in their careers by working with Yash Raj Films productions, including Aamir Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Madhuri Dixit, Kajol, Rani Mukerji, Abhishek Bachchan, Ayushmann Khurrana, and many others.
Talking about Yash Chopra, Karan Johar says in the trailer, “I’d watch all those beautiful movies, but it was Yash Chopra’s cinema that caught my eye.” Big B describes him as a “young filmmaker wanting to make different films.” During his lifetime, Yash Chopra made blockbuster romantic, social dramas and action films.
Rani Mukerji added that when she claimed she wanted to stand in for modern Indian women, Yash Chopra was the one who supported her. When no one else was prepared to launch him, after seeing his audition, YRF pledged to do so, according to Ranveer Singh.
The actors are shown in the trailer acting startled when they learn that Yash Chopra’s son Aditya Chopra has already done an interview with them. Aditya Chopra avoids the spotlight whenever possible and that is what made them surprised.
The Romantics looks to be a gift for all Bollywood movie enthusiasts as it provides a glimpse into the creative process of the guy responsible for many of Hindi cinema’s biggest hits.
