There were rumours that Rekha from the 1970s will appear in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Heeramandi a long back. The rumours, however, were shortly refuted by claims that Rekha would not be appearing in the series. Bollywood Hungama has now learned that the filmmaker is still trying to cast the actress, despite the fact that she wasn’t too enthusiastic on appearing in the series.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali wanted Rekha to take a significant role in Heeramandi, a well-placed industry source said to Bollywood Hungama. Unfortunately, the actress was hesitant to appear in the show, and negotiations between the two parties quickly broke down. SLB, though, is still considering having Rekha appear in Heeramandi. Bhansali is still in discussions with Rekha as of right now, but they are about a much smaller role. When questioned about the specifics of what Bhansali has in mind for the actress, the source replies, “At the moment, Bhansali is in talks with Rekha to feature in at least a special song sequence. Rekha must appear in Heeramandi,” he insists, “even if just in a minor role.”
The show will examine the cultural realities of Heeramandi, a glitzy quarter, through the stories of courtesans and their clients set against the turbulent backdrop of the 1940s Indian liberation fight, while negotiations between the two parties continue.
Heeramandi promises Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s classic look of relatively large stories, sophisticated and soulful characters, and billowing dynamics of a world rife with dispute during a defining time period for India. It is a mixture of love, betrayal, succession, and politics in the kothas (house of courtesans).
