Shah Rukh Khan is returning to the big screen with Siddharth Anand's action thriller King. The film has secured massive pre-release deals, but the big question is whether it can earn enough at the box office to meet its financial expectations.

The promotional campaign began on November 2, coinciding with Shah Rukh Khan's 61st birthday. The actor unveiled the film's first song, giving fans their first musical glimpse of the project. King reunites him with Anand after their 2023 blockbuster Pathaan. The film will release in theatres on December 24, 2026, during the Christmas holiday period.

King Earns ₹665 Crore In Pre-Release Business

According to Pinkvilla, King has secured deals worth approximately ₹665 crore through theatrical and non-theatrical rights. Phars Films reportedly acquired its overseas distribution rights for a minimum guarantee of ₹175 crore. Meanwhile, Pen Marudhar purchased the Indian theatrical rights for ₹250 crore. Together, these two deals account for ₹425 crore.

The remaining amount comes from digital, satellite and music rights. Netflix reportedly acquired the streaming rights for ₹150 crore, while satellite and music rights fetched ₹25 crore and ₹65 crore, respectively. However, Netflix's agreement includes a theatrical performance clause. This means the final streaming amount could change depending on the film's box-office performance.

How Big Of A Hit Does King Need To Be To Break Even?

The reported pre-release business does not mean the film has already recovered all its costs. Pinkvilla estimates the production budget at approximately ₹400 crore, excluding Shah Rukh Khan's acting fee but including Siddharth Anand's remuneration. Adding the superstar's notional fee takes the figure to ₹500 crore. Another ₹40 crore is expected to go towards release expenses, bringing the estimated overall cost to ₹540 crore.

The distributors also have a major target to meet. Their combined theatrical deals are worth ₹425 crore, including the domestic and overseas rights. Trade estimates show that King needs a worldwide gross of around ₹800 crore for distributors to make a profit. This calculation assumes a 60:40 split between domestic and overseas collections.

That translates to approximately ₹500 crore in domestic gross collections and ₹300 crore overseas. The worldwide target is comparable to the reported collections of Vicky Kaushal's Chhaava.

King features an ensemble cast, including Suhana Khan, Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Rani Mukerji, Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Arshad Warsi, Jaideep Ahlawat, Abhay Verma and Raghav Juyal. The film marks Suhana's first on-screen collaboration with her father. Its first song, Tu Mil Jaaye, features Shah Rukh and Deepika, with vocals by Arijit Singh and Madhubanti Bagchi. Ed Sheeran also contributes an English rap, while Sachin-Jigar have composed the track.
