Ishq was first released in theatres on November 28, 1997, and has remained a popular movie among almost all viewers ever since. This Indra Kumar film, which starred Aamir Khan, Ajay Devgn, Juhi Chawla, and Kajol, had some hysterically amusing moments in addition to super-hit songs, outstanding acting, and compelling drama. Particularly the comedic sequences are still lovingly recalled today and have received millions of YouTube views.
Bollywood Hungama had a conversation with Indra Kumar and the following is what you need to know:
IMDb claims that you had the concept for Ishq in 1991 and that you had intended to work with Aamir Khan and Pooja Bhatt to produce it at that time. Ist das so?
That’s not true, though. In 1991, the movie was not in the works. Planning for it came much later. Our first picks for the four lead actors were Aamir Khan, Ajay Devgn, Kajol, and Juhi Chawla. They all accepted our invitation to participate when we provided them this movie. Sometimes when excellent things have to happen, it happens right away (smiles).
One of the funniest scenes ever is the pipeline scene, which is awesome! How did you come up with such an unique scene?
That is teamwork. A director cannot accomplish anything on their own. His team—cameraman, action master, writer, etc.—always supports him. Actually, the author comes first, then everyone else.
When this scene was filmed, there were no VFX, cables, etc.
I’ll give Veeru Devgan ji the credit for this. He was a master mechanic. He was skilled at finishing the scene.
Did Aamir and Ajay feel nervous performing the scene?
No, they weren’t because it was shot quite carefully. Veeru Devgan, Ajay’s father, used extraordinary caution. Actors were never hung in midair or brought into the tense situation.
What about you then? Did you feel tense?
I was having fun, laughs On a more serious side, we are continuously concerned, even for copies or stunt doubles. The action director should be most worried, but after that, it is my obligation. However, I was confident that Veeru ji would take care of things because of how steadfast he was. As was to be expected, he executed it so deftly that it’s still remembered today. It displays Veeru Devgan’s character!
Have you considered creating Ishq sequel?
I’m constantly being asked to make Ishq 2, but I’ve never given it much attention. Additionally, I didn’t have the time because I instantly turned to Mann (1999).
